When managers are substance abusers
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that at least one quarter of employees in a given work force are affected by substance abuse, and often the employees marked for potential substance abuse and high job stress are managers, due to the nature of managerial work and the reward systems common in managerial systems. Personnel managers that want to assist managers and employees who may be at risk can take proactive approaches including: developing and running employee assistance programs as a business; defining cost management and treatment objectives; and avoiding faddish treatment methods. Additionally, managers should be asked to help correct workplace conditions that lead to high stress by doing such things as: increasing health programming; increasing employee education about health; and improving interpersonal skills for managers.
