Discrimination still a problem
Article Abstract:
Fifteen women between the ages of 16 and 22 years who have worked less than six months and whose employers have long-standing equal opportunity policies discuss their work and expectations. Many report being subjected to different questioning and different treatment than male peers during the selection process, and only managers in personnel and related departments are perceived as truly understanding equal opportunity and as treating male and female staff similarly. The women expect to be promoted on merit. They note a tendency to edge women into traditionally female posts, however. They would be inclined to leave organizations where their progress was limited. The women consider themselves lucky to be starting their careers at a time when management is eager to correct attitudes toward women and encourage them into more senior levels.
