Workers upgrade skills at training center
Article Abstract:
Southern California Edison established a regional training center for displaced and underskilled workers in response to 'Rebuild LA' campaign Chmn Peter Ueberroth's call for businesses to participate in the economic development of South Central Los Angeles. The call came after most of the area was laid to waste by civil unrest in 1992, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs. The Regional Job Training Center first began operating in Aug 1992, starting with 25 chronically unemployed students receiving training in auto mechanics from the California Service Station and Automotive Repair Assn. The program's goal is to find employment for graduates, so it designs its training according to the needs of businesses that offer jobs. Donating the training facilities and equipment makes good business sense for South California Edison because the retraining program is helping develop the strong local economy that is essential for the utility firm's success.

Depression
Article Abstract:
Free-lance PR practitioner Gabrielle Dowling suggests several points in dealing with depression in the workplace. Dowling, who herself has just recovered from bulimia, says that early detection of this often ignored illness makes a lot of difference because one episode of depression is very likely to be followed by another. Helping depressed co-workers requires compassion and sensitivity. It is often not enough to tell them not be depressed or to think positively. In fact, Dowling does not advise talk therapy for depressed individuals. Instead, she recommends the more immediate help that the combination of medication and therapy can provide. It is now a known fact that depression can be treated by medication. Anti-depressants, for instance, has proven effective in treating bulimia and panic disorder.
