Article Abstract:
Human resources and training professionals need to understand such tools as videoconferencing, the Internet, CD-ROM and electronic performance support because these technological innovations are steadily encroaching on the employee training function. Technology is increasingly infiltrating the training function and consequentially significantly transforming the role of the trainer. By developing an understanding of new technologies and how they are being applied, trainers and HR professionals can act as leaders in the technological revolution instead of being overpowered by it. There are two ways by which technology improves employee learning. The first involves the use of technology for delivering on-demand just-in-time training while the other requires the use of technology for supporting performance on the job via electronic performance support systems.

Emotional barriers to learning
Article Abstract:
Companies typically spend $180 billion each year on training and development, according to statistics from the Research Institute (Washington, DC), but often what employees learn they do not transfer back to the workplace. The barriers to skills transfer are employee attitudes and beliefs that hinder their motivation. A program designed to support employee training skills usage and a positive company environment which stresses communication and the expression of ideas between employees and management can help to encourage employees to utilize new skills and knowledge.

BT Systems take learning abroad
Article Abstract:
BT Systems Inc (Sterling Heights, MI) was acquired by BT Systems AB in Sweden, and in an effort to answer employees' questions about how the company functioned, twelve employees were sponsored to come to Sweden to meet with the parent company. The workers toured installations where company products are used, and met with their counterparts in Swedish facilities. The US employees were also exposed to many Swedish customs. As a result of the program, the transition period between the two firms went more smoothly.
