A bureaucracy lays siege to group homes; Mass. agency lawyers schemed to shut treatment center, judge holds; aversion therapy assailed
Article Abstract:
Judge Elizabeth O'Neill LaStaiti in RI has harshly criticized officials and lawyers in MA's Dept of Mental Retardation over their treatment of a center that uses aversion therapy. That therapy includes pinching, slapping, and electric shocks to stop students from hurting others or themselves, and officials who decry it have sought for a decade to close the Providence, RI Judge Rotenberg Educational Center. LaStaiti accuses dept officials of making false claims and abusing discovery practices to shut down the center.

No-share partners on rise; nearly half of big firms have a non-equity track
Article Abstract:
Non-equity partnerships are on the increase in law firms, due in part to financial stresses on the profession. This trend also makes for a sizable associate-partner leverage, keeping down the number of equity partners and decreasing pressure on the firm to grow. Some non-equity partners have substantial expertise in a particular legal area but may lack client-getting and administrative skills. Others want time for interests outside the firm such as teaching. The firm gains by retaining highly-trained individuals.
