Mobile response to Amtrak crash; local bar's disaster plan kept lawyers away from Amtrak crash victims
Article Abstract:
The Mobile County Bar Assn's efforts to prevent ambulance chasing by lawyers after the Amtrak accident in Oct 1993 caused distrust and misunderstanding among the general public. A Mobile newspaper accused the bar of ambulance chasing, while the bar insisted it was acting pursuant to a disaster response plan drawn up in 1991. The group drew up this plan in emulation of the Iowa bar's response to the 1989 airplane crash in Sioux City, IA. The bar noted that Alabama's champerty law provides an added deterrent to ambulance chasing in that state.

SEC goes online with EDGAR, but concerns remain
Article Abstract:
The SEC will start requiring that filings of securities registrations and annual reports be electronic on Apr 26, 1993. The commission will use the Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval Program (EDGAR). The EDGAR system automatically checks the documents transmitted for errors, and most are caught this way. This universal requirement to use EDGAR will mean some 13,000 novice users for the system by mid-1993.
