A law run wild; conservative lawmaker seeks asset forfeiture limits
Article Abstract:
Middle class dissatisfaction with abuses of the process has led some politicians to object to civil asset forfeiture. Federal forfeiture laws number about 100 and deal with issues as diverse as the drug trade, RICO, obscene material and immigration. States have enacted laws as well. Asset forfeiture can include a personal residence, even if the owner has not been convicted yet. Rep Henry Hyde of Illinois has introduced the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act which would make some changes including giving more notice to enable a property owner to challenge a seizure.

Walsh winds up probe; controversy comes with the territory for independent counsel
Article Abstract:
Iran-Contra independent counsel Lawrence Walsh is nearing the end of a six-year investigation after the law authorizing his position expired in Dec 1992. Seven guilty pleas, one conviction, and three reversals of guilty verdicts on appeal resulted from the investigation. Walsh is satisfied with the investigation's result even though national security agencies thwarted some of his document requests and there was much Republican outcry that his investigation was motivated by politics.
