Stroh's ads targeted; bikinis and beer lead to harassment at work, suit claims

Four female employees of Stroh's Brewery Co. have sued the company on the grounds that its advertising campaign encouraged sexual harassment. Attorney Lori Peterson, who filed the $1.2 million suit in Minnesota state court, said poster from the company's 'Swedish Bikini Team' campaign were submitted by the women as examples of offensive materials in their workplace. The case raises free speech questions; previous attempts to link pornography to sex discrimination have not prevailed.

Gordon Lish's $2,000 letter; writer wins copyright suit against Harper's, but loses libelous editing claim
Article Abstract:
A federal court has ruled that Harper's magazine violated the fair use doctrine of copyright law by printing avant-garde author and publishing industry personality Gordon Lish's unpublished letter to his students. The court dismissed Lish's claims of libel for printing an edited version of his letter with no indication as to what had been left out. An attorney for the magazine felt that the court gave insufficient weight to the newsworthiness of the quotation.

Married attorneys John Coale and Greta Van Susteren feel a disciplinary complaint against them by the West Virginia State Bar is groundless and was made to protect West Virginia turf. The complaint charges the couple with violating West Virginia ethical rules by contacting accident victims and offering to represent them. The couple have counterclaimed in federal court, questioning the West Virginia bar's jurisdiction over out-of-state attorneys.
