A roomful of comments; Ethics 2000 Commission asks for input on the Model Rules - and gets plenty
Article Abstract:
ABA Pres Jerome J. Shestack appointed the Ethics 2000 Commission to conduct the first comprehensive review of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct since their adoption by the House of Delegates in 1983, and the Commission will present its final report at the 2000 ABA Annual Meeting. The interest in the Model Rules and the commission's asking more than 1,500 organizations to comment means that it can expect an increasing volume of comment in late 1998. The commission may feel pressured by this increasing volume of comment to undertake a complete revamping of the Model Rules.

From death's door
Article Abstract:
The elimination of federal funds for the US's 20 death penalty resource centers combined with the anti-terrorism bill signed by President Clinton in April 1996 promise to make appeals more difficult for death row inmates. Prosecutors say that will eliminate a longstanding and expensive obstacle to the exercise of justice, but advocates for the post-conviction defender organizations, as they are formally called, say the changes will make the process slower and more expensive.

A comeback for hair evidence: a new form of DNA testing is reviving the value of a common type of proof that had fallen into disrepute
Article Abstract:
Mitochondrial DNA testing for hair stands to replace the microscopic analysis of hair as a forensic evidence tool. Despite law enforcement's increasing reliance on the mitochondrial DNA testing, many courts view the new method with skepticism. Inconsistent empirical results have denied the method wide acceptance as reliable scientific evidence.
