ALI's Restatements of the Law
Article Abstract:
West Publishing's $2,500 Restatements of the Law is a set of 10 CD-ROMs providing the American Law Institute's legal discussions. The discussions focus on trusts, torts, security, agency, property, conflict of laws, contracts, judgments, US foreign relations and restitution. The CD-ROM uses the Premise engine to search the databases. Selecting a particular volume to search is as easy as clicking on the title or highlighting the title and hitting the Return key. Several titles may be searched at one time by using the Ctrl plus mouse button command. Once users have selected the volume or volumes, dialog boxes appear to lead them through the process. The Premise search engine uses commands similar to those used in the Westlaw databases. Premise can connect to Westlaw and retrieve the full text of any highlighted case that appears in the CD-ROM. The Restatements may be purchased singly as well as by the set.

Legal researcher's big brother
Article Abstract:
Advanced Productivity Software's $75 Online LookUp 3.0 legal practice management software helps lawyers bill time spent online to the appropriate client. Users must first enter a list of approved clients or cases into Online LookUp. Each user will then be required to enter a client name or matter before they are permitted to log into the legal research databases Westlaw or Lexis, or any commercial online service. The login screen appears automatically at the beginning of each session. Users may configure Online LookUp to require a user ID for each session. Online LookUp tracks the time spent online and stores it in a file that may be edited or exported into a spreadsheet or other time and billing system. When users employ Online LookUp to connect to Westlaw or Lexis, electronic feeds send tracking information to the service providers, who will include it in billing statements.
