Article Abstract:
James O. Cole, the senior vice pres, general counsel and corporate secretary of Republic Industries Inc., the largest US auto retailer, has charge of a department of 25 attorneys and 10 paralegals, and other support staff. The company has grown so fast that the corporate culture is an evolving one. Cole states he is trying to reduce the number of outside counsel used to a core group and to develop partnerships with them. These partnerships can include favorable rates in exchange for ongoing work.

Alan P Shor, the exec vice pres, general counsel, chief logistics officer and secretary of the Zale Corp, the largest US retailer of specialty jewelry with approximately 1,100 stores throughout the US, heads a department of four lawyers and two legal assistants. Zale's financial turnaround since emerging from bankruptcy in 1993 has industry analysts closely watching its rapidly rising bottom line.
