'And what about domestic partners?': gay men and lesbians who work for big firms, or want to, make bold demands
Article Abstract:
Gay and lesbian students and young lawyers have become strikingly aggressive in proclaiming their status and finding ways to use it to advantage at major law firms nationwide. Many firms in New York, San Francisco, and Washington DC now offer full domestic-partner benefits regardless of gender. Top gay and lesbian job applicants find they often have bargaining power, and many rule out firms that do not offer such benefits. Some use their membership in sexual-orientation networks to recruit other lawyers for welcoming firms.

Large firms are bullish on prospects overseas
Article Abstract:
The 250 largest US law firms expanded eagerly into Asia and parts of Europe in the past year, with five new offices in Hong Kong and six in London. Singapore, Beijing, Jakarta, Bangkok, Taipei, and Tokyo were the top Asian draws, with firms hoping for project finance, privatization, and energy work. Changes in British law made London a hot spot, and Eastern Europe is developing a stronger market infrastructure that draws more lawyers. Brussels has been a disappointment, however, and Latin America was static.

A Wall Street with charm; Yankee and Southern firms want a piece of Charlotte's good fortune
Article Abstract:
Firms are flocking to Charlotte, NC, from NYC and elsewhere, following the bankers that have made Charlotte the third-largest US financial center. Wall Street firm Cadwaller, Wickersham & Taft was the first of its ilk, stating in Jan that it plans an Apr opening, though several Southern firms have already established a presence or announced plans to do so. The city offers a lower cost of living, a pleasant climate, and a friendly atmosphere, but competition will be fierce as more law firms enter the market.
