Anti-gay prejudice persists in legal workplace
Article Abstract:
Discrimination against gay and lesbian attorneys is still a problem in the legal community and remedies are inadequate. About 40% of attorneys in Los Angeles and New York studies have witnessed such discrimination and most of the gay attorneys in the Los Angeles study felt an adverse effect on their careers due to their sexual orientation. Courts and bar associations need to institute clear prohibitions of such discrimination, employee benefits should cover same-sex couples and domestic partners should feel welcome at employer-sponsored social gatherings.

New law firm partners face tax consequences; newly minted partners need to become familiar with the tax effects of their promotion
Article Abstract:
Law firm associates will experience changes in their tax situations on becoming partners and should consult with tax advisers upon promotion. Law firms can be taxed as partnerships, C corporations or S corporations and in each, the tax effect of promotion to partner varies somewhat. New partners may have a substantial capital outlay to meet their capital contributions. Changes in the self-employment tax and the usefulness of the business expense deduction should also be taken note of when the partner is no longer an employee.

Women haven't arrived
Article Abstract:
Recent studies by the Harvard Women's Law Assn, the Committee on Women in the Legal Profession of the City Bar of New York, and the ABA's Commission on the Status of Women reach the same conclusion by different routes. All find women lawyers continue to lag in pay, promotion, and respect despite nearing 40% of the profession. Denial of the problem by many practitioners, especially senior ones who would have to pay for significant change, exacerbates it. Yet workplace flexibility is feasible and affordable.
