Are longer hours here to stay? Quality time losing out
Article Abstract:
The pressures of increased competition, the hourly billing system and of the traditionally over-achieving legal culture are prompting many attorneys to complain of a decreased quality of life. An ABA member survey conducted in 1990 showed that half of private practitioners complained of inadequate time for their families. Some firms are trying value billing rather than hourly billing, but clients are reluctant to accept alternative billing methods. Many firms acknowledge the importance of quality of life issues but maintain that their firm does not exert undue pressure on employees.

Rapid transit: for adventure and camaraderie, just add whitewater
Article Abstract:
Whitewater rafting can be an excellent adventure for lawyers. Many rivers are available for this, including ones in Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Camaraderie can become part of the reward of the sport, as one goes with a team. The sheer abandon in nature provides immediate gratification, unlike many legal battles.
