Associate committees give a voice to new lawyers; firms can reap rewards by improving communication with those practicing on front lines

The importance of allowing associates to communicate with management on key law firm issues and on career development is discussed. Associate committees are a way of maintaining two-way communication between associates and partners, and guidelines for establishing and running such committees are given.

Law firm fellowships for law graduates interested in full-time pro bono employment are discussed. Programs at firms including New York's Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts and Florida's Holland and Knight are described. People return to the law firm as associates after their fellowship.

The increase in Asian American attorneys, as is their accounting for most of the increase in minority attorneys hired. The decrease in Asian-American attorneys making partner is troubling, but could be caused by a movement from law firm to in-house.
