Ban on abortion pill challenged; pregnant woman who tried to import drug loses first round in courts
Article Abstract:
July 1992 saw a new strategy on the part of abortion rights activists as a pregnant volunteer, Leona Benten, reentered the US from England after supporters notified customs officials that she would be arriving with one dose of the abortion drug RU486. The drug lacks FDA approval and federal judges were deaf to Benten's plea that FDA policy permitting the importation of unapproved drugs for personal use should apply to her, stating that this policy applied only to experimental drugs for life-threatening diseases. Benten eventually underwent a surgical abortion.

Molding the courts; Clinton may be able to surpass number of Bush judicial nominations
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton will have the chance to fill many federal court judgeships and as many as five seats on the Supreme Court during his administration. There were 102 vacant federal judgeships when Clinton won the election. Since approximately five vacancies occur monthly, Clinton will probably have appointed more federal judges than George Bush by the midpoint of his term. The election outcome means more federal court congestion for the time being since nominations awaiting confirmation at that time will be withdrawn.

Domestic retaliations; escalating violence in the family courts
Article Abstract:
Courtroom violence is escalating, and the situation is particularly bad in family courts, a legal specialty where emotions tend to run high. Barbara Smith did a study of courtroom violence at the state and local levels in 1989 and 1990 for the National Sheriffs' Assn which found that while most violence occurs in criminal cases, divorce cases run second. Some judges feel that family courts are the most dangerous. The National Center for State Courts has suggested ways of making courtrooms safer.
