Patent suit puts millions at stake; company claims work of bar code inventor Lemelson
Article Abstract:
Jerome H Lemelson, one of the most prolific US inventors, has litigated with big companies internationally for licensing revenues related to his many patents, and a foundation he started, the Lemelson Medical Education and Research Foundation, has carried on this litigious tradition since his death. Critics claim that Lemelson prolonged the process under pre-revision US patent law so that the 17-year monopoly on his inventions began only after similar technologies were widely used in the industrial world.
