Beating the burnout clock: put clients and fees aside for a while to find time for your own life
Article Abstract:
Solo practitioners who commit themselves to taking time out for relaxation or other activities report satisfaction and better-sustained interest in their work. Some want time to write books, others to spend more time with their families, and still others simply to avoid burnout and improve their golf game. Such a cutback in office hours requires discipline and a reliable support team for solo practitioners, who are often nervous about leaving the office and risking missed business.

Second wind; if you love law but not law firms, self-employment may be the thing
Article Abstract:
Moving from law firm employment to being a sole practitioner can be the right thing for older attorneys whose family-related financial demands have diminished and for whom working for a firm is no longer appealing. Cain warns lawyers thinking of a second career to change before age 60 to give time for client development. The ABA published Cain's book.

Golden rule of parting ways; make sure any staff discharges are well-documented for just cause
Article Abstract:
Personnel procedure manuals can bolster morale in small law firms and prevent the lawsuits which often arise from inconsistent employee treatment. Firings should only take place for just cause, which involves discussing the job with each new employee and allowing the time to correct performance problems. Time for such tasks can be made even in small law firms where time is at a premium.
