Beware downturn doomsayers; stock returns, not election returns, are better predictors of market trends
Article Abstract:
Many cyclical analyses of the stock market err because the weight data used is very old and thus of limited applicability to the current market. Since 1984, the stock market has performed best in post-presidential election years and according to Mark Vakkur's theory this should have been its worst time. In fact, two of the five years since 1984 in which the S&P 500 increased 20% or more have been post-election years. It makes sense to own only stocks of companies whose projected annual growth rates are greater than the stocks' price-to-earnings ratio.

Class distinctions: mutual fund groupings can be helpful investment guides - if they're legitimate
Article Abstract:
The class distinctions in mutual funds need to be carefully evaluated because a fund could be placed in a class where it will look like a good investment when, with similar funds, it would rate low. Managers of low or middle range funds also have incentives to take risks because they would get a bonus if they succeed and nothing would happen if they do not. Index funds can be a better option but it is difficult to maintain a balanced portfolio.

Mom/dad, we have to talk; long-term care insurance shields assets of elderly parents, unburdens children
Article Abstract:
The dilemna for adult children of dealing with a parent's long-term insurance needs is discussed. For an aging parent, buying long-term care insurance can be a way to protect inheritable assets for their offspring and to take some of the decisions about their medical care if they become disabled out of their children's hands.
