Career marketing professionals may within a decade be running law firms, which may also have a sales staff and spend money protecting their brand-name equity. Law firms can early in the 21st century expect competition to increase dramatically as accounting firms expand into law practice, large international firms expand still further and traditional firms use more sophisticated marketing techniques. The segment of the bar pushing multidisciplinary practice may come out on top, as they market much more aggressively than the traditional law firms.!

Profits are at record levels in US law firms and summer associate hiring is also at record levels, but most firms held their pay flat after a large number of big increases in 1998. R. Bruce McLean, chairman of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer and Feld, stated confidence that the market for legal services would remain strong for the foreseeable future.US law schools reporting increases in on-campus recruiting in fall 1998 approached 90%
