Bottom line disputes
Article Abstract:
Commercial law cases may not be factually dramatic, but the outcome can mean the difference between success and liquidation for a company. This result can also have a ripple effect on employees, communities the businesses are located in, and even the general economy. As commercial law becomes more complex and the economy expands, commercial law cases are on the rise. The number of contract cases filed in federal district courts went up from 31,254 in 1994 to 42,292 in 1998, according to the Administrative Office of the US Courts. Advantages and disadvantages of filing in the federal courts are detailed.

The specter of death; bereaved clients require sensitivity and emotional support from lawyers
Article Abstract:
Lawyers counseling bereaved clients should recognize how their priorities are caught in the psychological yearning to understand why the loved one has suddenly died. Many lawyers feel they lack the professional training for dealing with bereaved clients or the time to do so, but 'holistic lawyering' is possible with knowledge of a few guidelines. Lawyers should let the client know their loss counts, be ready to minister to more than the client's legal needs and understand that such clients do not pursue their legal claims for financial gain.

Silver cloud' dark lining; amid largely rosy findings, crime report cites some ominous trends
Article Abstract:
The ABA Criminal Justice Section reported at the 1999 Midyear ABA Meeting that the eight core "index" crimes measured by the FBI in 1997 had decreased 7% since 1993, but the increase in drug use, particularly by children, was totally unacceptable. The total number of people admitting illegal drug use within the month prior to being surveyed went up 18% between 1992 and 1997. Most age groups reported increased drug use. The results raised questions about US policies toward crime and drug use.
