Business seeks exemption from paying royalty fees; a House bill would amend the Copyright Act so that stores and eateries would not pay for most piped-in tunes
Article Abstract:
The National Licensed Beverage Assn and the National Restaurant Assn are trying to get Congress to amend the 1976 Copyright Act so they could stop making royalty payments to songwriters' associations. The amendment is thought to be similar to 1994's Fairness in Musical Licensing Act and would eliminate royalty payments by restaurants, bars and all other commercial establishments featuring public performance of copyrighted music. Songwriters complain that the amendment would take away up to 25% of their income.

Article Abstract:
The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws saw use of antenuptial contracts start to increase in the early 1980s, with its approval of the Uniform Premarital Agreement Act, which 26 states have adopted in some form.
