Helping corporations comply with rules is new legal business
Article Abstract:
The Organizational Sentencing Guidelines' listing of effective corporate compliance programs as mitigating circumstances when determining sanctions has given rise to the new legal specialty of helping businesses set such programs up. Law firms can be helpful in setting up procedures for reviewing compliance programs periodically. Corporations selecting lawyers for this purpose should look for those with white collar crime defense experience or those with experience as investigators for the relevant government agencies.

Ford thinks it has a better idea: hardball; the automaker has thinned its outside counsel and adopted a tough pretrial settlement stance
Article Abstract:
Under the leadership of assistant general counsel James A. Brown, Ford Motor Co has sharply reduced its product liability litigation costs through an aggressive strategy. Ford pared its list of 200 outside law firms to 40 with top litigation records, moved all discovery in-house, and began taking to court every case in which the plaintiffs reject an initial settlement offer. Total litigation costs have reportedly fallen from $200 million per year to $100 million, and the victory ratio remains at or near 80%.
