Changes at the top: proposal for new ABA leadership structure draws mixed reviews
Article Abstract:
The ABA's Special Committee on Governance has issued a draft version of its recommendations for a restructuring that includes eliminating the ABA Assembly. Other, somewhat less controversial steps would include restricting the size of the House of Delegates by eliminating seats for state bar assns and former Board of Governors members, increasing section representation on the Nominating Committee and making it larger, and mandating the appointment of women and minorities to the Board of Governors and the Nominating panel.

Slicing the pie; sections seek greater role in ABA governance
Article Abstract:
ABA sections are seeking to participate more in the three bodies with authority over association governance: the House of Delegates, the Nominating Committee and the Board of Governors. The sections have grown steadily since the 1970s and think this fact should be reflected by giving them a greater voice in association governance. State and some local bar associations who hold the largest blocs of House of Delegates seats oppose this move.

Standing pat; the ABA House of Delegates retains current procedures for deciding whether to act on issues
Article Abstract:
The ABA House of Delegates decided at its 1998 midyear meeting to retain current procedure rather than make changes in response to concerns that the association's policy-making at times moved too far from its core mission.
