Community profile, Tacoma, Washington; a way of life is threatened

Article Abstract:

All but 1% of the Puyallup Indian Reservation now belongs to the industrial area of Tacoma, WA. This area contains one of the biggest hazardous waste sites on the Superfund list. The Puyallup are a subsistence fishing tribe, and their livelihood as well as their health has been badly damaged by pollution. An EPA health study's failure to mention the Puyallup is evidence of environmental discrimination, as is the fact that Native American areas are home to a disproportionate number of hazardous waste sites.

Community profile, Moss Point, Mississippi; town fights waste plan

Article Abstract:

Pascagoula and Moss Point, MS, lie across the Escatawpa River from each other, the former, mainly white, the latter, mainly poor African American. Moss Point is pervaded by the smell of the local garbage incinerator, and last year Pascagoula's City Council decided to import and burn medical waste there as well. Local doctors and residents of both races, alarmed by possible health risks, are voicing their opposition.
