Competition policy

Article Abstract:

The European Commission of the European Union has set out a white paper on competition policy called 'Modernization of the Rules Implementing Articles 81 and 82 of the EC Treaty'. This white paper represents a major reform in terms of competition rules, such as has not been seen for 40 years. A block exemption is planned for vertical agreements. The changein attitude to vertical restraint agreements is geared to making the rules reflect the realities of Europe's single market.

Issues are presented concerning the European Commission's policy on competition in the marketplace. The conditions which have been imposed on 117 corporate mergers and the 14 prohibited mergers are discussed.
