Consciousness raising in the land of the rising sun
Article Abstract:
An issue particularly apparent in the Japanese business world is the difficulty of combining individuality and efficiency. Hiromi Kuramitsu feels that the younger generation offers some hope in this regard. They did not grow up imbued with the ancient ethic of serving their companies the way samurais did their clans. Shinji Kirimura disagrees, stating that the ethic of competitiveness is drilled into Japanese children from the time they start school and they do not have time to think of themselves. They all agree that little progress has been made in corporate social responsibility.

How Westinghouse let another one get away
Article Abstract:
The active-matrix technology that makes new flat-panel displays on laptop computers possible, was fumbled away to Japanese corporations by Westinghouse and subsequent American venture capital start-ups. Inventor T. Peter Brody was funded heavily in research and development phases, but both Westinghouse and the venture capitalists balked at financing the manufacturing process. As a result, active-matrix technology is now dominated by Japanese corporations. America needs an industrial transformation based on investment in manufacturing in order to keep native technologies.

Business ethics, Eastern style
Article Abstract:
Yoshio Maruta, the president of Kao Corp, used Zen meditation and Buddhist philosophy in his search for ways to manage a business as large as Kao when he first took the job. Prince Shotoku's '17 Article Constitution' taught him that people in high places should live in harmony with and keep open communication with those less fortunate and that all men are basically equal. Kao is dedicated to the principle that its success will result from respect for its consumers.
