Article Abstract:

Cyprus, in Autocephalous Greek-Orthodox Church of Cyprus v. Goldberg, sought the return of four Byzantine mosaics stolen sometime after the 1974 Turkish invasion of that country. These mosaics were subsequently purchased by an Indiana art dealer, Peg Goldberg, without much inquiry into how the mosaics were obtained, even though she knew one of the middlemen was convicted felon. Cyprus won, which should make it easier for foreign governments to seek the return of lost or stolen parts of their cultural heritage through the courts.

Article Abstract:

The Rwandan trial chamber rejected a pretrial challenge to jurisdiction by a man accused of criminal genocide. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was the jurisdiction challenged. The trial chamber rejected defendant's arguments that the Tribunal violated Rwanda's sovereignty, was incompetently established by the UN Security Council, violated jus de non evocando, violated UN charter and was neither impartial nor independent.

Article Abstract:

The meeting of the Sixth Committee at the 52nd Session of the UN General Assembly presented a law on cross-border insolvency, endorsed a convention draft suppressing terrorist bombings, and planned a conference on the establishment of an International Criminal Court. The committee also endorsed changes in UN procedural rules and the extension of competence for the UN Administrative Tribunal.
