Dangerous dedication; studies suggest long hours, productivity pressures can cause serious health problems and a higher suicide rate for attorneys
Article Abstract:
The stress of the emphasis on productivity, feelings of isolation and general commercialization of law practice has very serious effects on attorneys' health including increased risk of miscarriages for women and an increased suicide rate. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found in a 1992 suicide study that stress's negative effects were not limited to women, and the death certificates of male suicide cases revealed that lawyers, health care workers, psychologists and policemen had high-stress occupations.

The standby generation
Article Abstract:
A ferocious job market has young law-school graduates without stellar credentials hunting more creatively, and desperately, than ever before. Six months after graduation, 84.5% of the class of 1988 had full-time legal jobs, but only 69.6% of the class of 1994 did, and 15.3% were unemployed. Networking has replaced mass-mailings and responding to school postings as the strategy of choice, and large numbers of new graduates work as temp lawyers. Employee leasing firms may offer a new variation on that theme.

The fitness track
Article Abstract:
Many busy lawyers are finding that following an exercise program helps control stress. Sometimes the first step is taken due to a crisis, like Robin Frankel's post-divorce anxiety. Lawyers with families must adhere to a strict schedule to make time for exercise, while single ones have a more unregimented life. Some lawyers find working out at home more convenient. To Buck and Gordon of Seattle, WA maintaining physical fitness is part of the work ethic.
