Precautionary measures
Article Abstract:
Upgrading a law firm's software, which may include case management, acounting, time and billing applications, can be hazardous and calls for precautionary measures. Ideally, an upgrade program saves data and provides an easy way to back out of a program upgrade and data conversion if something goes wrong. In a situation where no backup is available, an electronic discovery program called EnCase might be an option, but it is expensive.

More networking tips from the lawyers' lab
Article Abstract:
Twelve useful networking tips for lawyers are presented. Lawyers experiencing network instability problems should to refer to the manufacturer's Web site for current bug patches and fixes. Lawyers should also refer to third-party vendors' Web sites for solutions of the CD-ROM difficulties often encountered with network OS updates. Lawyers can retain older file servers as emergency backup servers for new hardware failures. Using standard Fast SCSI-2 adapters, as opposed to Ultra or Ultra Wide SCSI adapters, when connecting file server peripherals will avoid the timing difficulties often experienced with newer SCSI adapters. Lawyers should also never use identical server names for disparate network file servers. In addition, attorneys should regularly check their power supply fans and implement alarms in all file servers and desktops to alert users of cooling failures.
