Divorce, New York style; study recommends new rules to protect clients, regulate lawyers
Article Abstract:
A study by a New York committee of judges and attorneys has proposed reforms for the state's domestic relations adjudication. Recommendations include public access to attorney disciplinary information, the prohibition of attorney-client sex, and a new case management system including stricter enforcement of judicial orders and more expedience in visitation and custody disputes. The recommendations would also require that attorneys give clients a written retainer agreement and client 'bill of rights.'

Lawyers in harm's way; many surveyed report threats of violence in domestic relations cases
Article Abstract:
Results of an informal survey sent in 1997 to members of the ABA Family Law Section have 60% of respondents reporting threats by the opposing party in a divorce case, 17% threats by their own client, and 12% had been the victims of violence by either a client or an opposing party at least once. Experts advise that attorneys limit access to their offices, have conferences in neutral places and have an emergency plan in place.
