Do drug courts work? Critics say minor cases flood the system
Article Abstract:
Cook County, IL started a night court to deal with the large volume of drug cases in Oct 1989, an example of the drug courts which now exist in about ten jurisdictions, according to a report by an ad hoc committee of the ABA Criminal Justice Section. The ABA's Special Committee on the Drug Crisis is pleased with the expedited disposal of cases possible in such courts, but there are some critics. The critics contend that this segregation of drug cases can lead to an assembly-line processing with inadequate attention to defendants' rights and quality justice.
