Employment law; partners seeking protection
Article Abstract:
The search of partners for remedies against forms of employment discrimination once they have reached the rank of partner which bars them from using discrimination laws open only to employees is discussed. The 6th Circuit ruling of Simpson v. Ernst & Young, an age discrimination claim and one of the leading cases in this area, is discussed.

Employment law; sexual harassment
Article Abstract:
Reviewing the relevant authorities in Arkansas and the 8th Circuit suggests that the dismissal of Paula Jones' sexual harassment claims on a grant of summary judgment in Pres Bill Clinton's favor by the federal district court for the Eastern District of Arkansas was not in conformity with the Supreme Court's view. Nothing in the 1986 Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson ruling suggests that a single incident does not suffice for a Title VII claim or that the offensive conduct has to be sustained for such a claim to exist. The more recent Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc. and Faragher v. City of Boca Raton also do not make this suggestion.

Employment; a 'BFOQ' defense
Article Abstract:
Television actress Hunter Tylo's suit against the Spelling Entertainment Group alleged her dismissal from the show "Melrose Place" to have been pregnancy discrimination and breach of contract, while Spelling countered by claiming that not being pregnant was a "bona fide occupational qualification" since television producers needed the right to terminate for pregnancy if this condition was incompatible with the character played. The suit was based on the California Fair Employment and Housing Act and breach of contract.
