Ill. abortion tiff stalemates law: high court stalls new parental involvement statute
Article Abstract:
Controversy over laws regarding parental involvement in the abortion decision has struck both the Illinois Supreme Court and the South Dakota attorney general. The US Supreme Court has established the guidelines for laws that require the consent or notice of both parents, but not those regarding only one parent of a minor who plans to have an abortion. A 1995 statute in Illinois asked the state's high court to draft procedures for bypass hearings, but in Jan 1996 the court refused to do so saying no such bypass was required.

Retirees sue to fight cuts in benefits; former Sears workers want court to find breach of duty
Article Abstract:
Suits against Sears Roebuck and Co by retirees claim a 1998 announcement of a reduction in retirees' life insurance benefits constitutes a breach of fiduciary duty. The 1996 Supreme Court decision in Varity v. Howe listing common-law fraud as well as breaches of fiduciary duty under ERISA as possible causes of action against large employers offering employee benefits could well predict success in these cases.
