Lawyers buck downsizing trend; executive branch workforce being reduced as attorneys are added
Article Abstract:
Reductions in the size of the executive branch of the federal govt have so far passed over the lawyers, whose numbers have in fact increased. In 1993 the executive branch had 2,200,000 workers, 17,557 of them lawyers. In Mar 1995 it had 2,037,437 employees, but 25,191 lawyers. The Internal Revenue Service, Dept of Justice, and Securities and Exchange Commission employ the most lawyers, and all have increased legal staff. However, further reductions will include more pink slips, which may start targeting attorneys.

Collection next step for Marcos victims
Article Abstract:
Two sets of plaintiffs against former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos recently received awards totalling $2 billion against his estate. They may be among the few in such cases ever to collect, thanks to the size of the known estate ($1.45 billion) and its relative accessibility. The two trials were a class action on behalf of 10,000 victims and a direct action filed by 21 individuals. In most such cases the plaintiffs are unable to locate the assets of the accused.
