External relations
Article Abstract:
The European Union has established several areas of policy concerning its external relations. The EU will commence membership talks with Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Estonia in 1998, although all east European candidate countries will participate in enlargement talks. The EU is eager to prevent a trade war with the US over French oil firm Total's planned $2 billion investment in Iran, although the issue is causing concern. The Lome convention expires in 2000 but will not be renewed as it is considered outdated. Vietnam's quota for textiles exports to the EU has been increased.

External relations
Article Abstract:
The European Union's foreign relations have recently been marked by increased tension in relations with Asia and the US. In Sep-Oct, 1996, EU foreign ministers will decide what retaliatory action the EU should take against the US Helms-Burton act, which penalises foreign firms investing in Cuba. In Asia, the EU has clashed with the Alliance of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) over Myanmar's human rights record. This led ASEAN to criticise the EU for interfering in ASEAN internal matters.
