FTC targets deceptive cyberspace advertising; the agency, along with the SEC and state attorneys general, has begun bringing enforcement actions involving online ads
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been in the forefront of federal agencies which have worked to prevent fraudulent advertising on the Internet, although the SEC and the Food and Drug Administration have done their part as well. Actions by the FTC have usually resulted in cease-and-desist orders. The states have also tried to patrol use of the Internet through a task force formed by the National Assn of Attorneys General. The Council of Better Business Bureaus' National Advertising Division comes to mind in the area of industry self-regulation. Online advertising presents issues which have yet to be addressed.

Going once, going twice- sold! Domain name market heats up
Article Abstract:
The value of Internet domain names is increasing and the number of domain-name brokers crowding the Internet is evidence of this fact. Domain names ending in .com, designating commercial entities, are appearing as assets in sales, bankruptcies, and even mortgages. Appraising their value is becoming important, especially as new top-level domains, such as .firm or .shop, may soon appear. Selecting a domain-name broker should be done with caution, including a check of related domains and of references.

Spilling your cookies on the 'Net: a big, silly food fight on privacy
Article Abstract:
Testimony at a June 10-13, 1997, Federal Trade Commission hearing on Internet use concerned privacy and censorship. The privacy of medical records was a big concern, since employers and insurers are free to look at them. Organizations interested in Internet dangers include the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. European users feel censorship and the ease of navigation are more important concerns than privacy.
