Finding the root causes; some see solutions to crime in 'nature vs. nurture' studies
Article Abstract:
Whether how parent raise a child has more bearing on crime than biological factors continues to be controversial, and the Vermont Law School hosted a 1999 symposium on this subject. The symposium sought to answer whether criminal behavior whether social factors, biological factors, or some combination of the two had more of a bearing on crime. Although the evidence marshaled behind social factors is very strong, an ever-changing mix of environmental and biological factors do seem to influence human behavior.

Mandatories going, going ... gong; support for minimum drug sentences hits new low
Article Abstract:
More of the public who once supported mandatory minimum drug sentences have realized they have not reduced crime or put large drug dealers out of businesses. What these sentences have is to fill prisons with young, nonviolent drug offenders serving long sentences of large and growing cost to taxpayers. At least six states have repealed or reformed such laws since 1993, and reform efforts are under way in several other states. Congress is the one holdout, where mandatory minimums remain popular.
