Funding cuts spark court crisis
Article Abstract:
Cook County, Illinois will be laying off 15 of 66 lawyers that defend indigent convicted persons. The budget crisis that has led to this is a result of the conflict of the state's war on crime mentality and the economic pressures being felt in many states. Ten capital appeals involving indigents are in jeopardy because of funding and personnel cuts. One alternative proposed by an Illinois state task force would be for the Illinois Supreme Court to order the legislature to fund the defense of indigents.
