GM lawsuits pile up in Philly; despite slamming NBC
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp faces about 13 class actions regarding its allegedly fire-prone trucks. A recall of 4.7 million to 5 million of the trucks is being sought. The vehicles in question are GMC and Chevrolet pickup trucks with side-mounted fuel tanks from the model years 1973 to 1987. The class actions are trying to force GM to repair the trucks, pay owners for lessened resale value and disseminate information about the alleged defects. The cost of doing these three things could run as high as $1 billion.

GM settlement praised, opposed
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp has settled 36 class action suits brought by owners of the GM pickup trucks with sidesaddle gas tanks who claim their vehicles have decreased in value due to the much-publicized un-safety of the vehicles' sidesaddle fuel tanks. The settlement would give between 4.7 million and six million truck owners $1,000 rebates towards the purchase of new trucks and would also pay legal fees. If everyone accepts, the settlement could cost the company as much as $6 million.

GM settles suits; turmoil remains; plaintiffs say automaker hides truth about trucks
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM) faces a continuing spate of lawsuits and harsh criticism from plaintiffs' lawyers despite settling four cases on Sept 8, 1995, and four others recently. Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said GM will pay $100 million before year's end, and could pay $1 billion all told. GM may have recently settled the cases, one of which had already had a $105 million verdict overturned, because of possible discovery abuse charges against it.
