Gay marriage battle rocks union's foundations
Article Abstract:
Efforts by 16 states to bar same-sex marriages after a Hawaii court decision allowing the practice will, if upheld by the Supreme Court, allow states to ignore the federal constitution's full faith and credit clause if they believe honoring another state's laws conflicts with their legislative convictions. This could lead to a fragmenting of the national unity which was the goal of American federalism.

Hate crime legislation muzzles free speech
Article Abstract:
Laws providing enhanced penalties for hate crimes restrict free speech, and it is possible to fight bigotry without compromising civil rights. Pushing the states on gay unions; Vermont law will lead to suits elsewhere, advocates say
Article Abstract:

Most same-sex couples seeking civil unions have not been from Vermont, and experts foresee trouble for gay lawyers arguing that civil unions must be recognized under the full faith and credit clause of the US Constitution
