HSC to amend COSHH regulations
Article Abstract:
The UK's Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations would be amended to conform to European Union standards under Health and Safety Commission proposals revising occupational exposure limits (OELs) and maximum exposure limits (MELs). The proposed MEL changes cover 18 substances, including cotton dust, wool process dust, softwood dusts, and soluble platinum salts. The OEL respiral dusts values would be lowered if the revised international standard sampling method is adopted.

UK safety managers can use a number of software, CD-ROM, and computer-based training products to control hazardous substances dangers in the workplace. Prevention measures, recordkeeping, training, and monitoring procedures are required under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulation 1988 (COSHH). Safety managers should be careful in choosing software, since many products are inappropriate for monitoring COSHH requirements.
