Nancy R Heinen, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Apple Computer Inc, whose customers are mainly in the education and design publishing segments of the economy, has deputy counsel with specialties including worldwide sales, corporate, intellectual property, software engineering and litigation reporting to her. Well-known firms serve the corporation as outside counsel, including Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati and Fenwick and West. Heinen states she is seeing the maturation of Apple, which developed without much government interference.

Terrence Hallinan, the new district attorney of San Francisco, has just finished his first year leading the 117-attorney office. A one-time criminal defense lawyer and liberal, he was elected mainly by the city's gay and black population. According to Hallinan, he has been arrested many times for his participation in civil rights demonstrations. Hallinan recently supported the medical marijuana initiative and has in the past proposed legalizing prostitution. Hallinan's father was a well-known San Francisco liberal attorney himself.

A city's 'week of darkness'; legal community mourns its dead and redirects its rage

Article Abstract:

San Francisco's legal community is shaken by the deaths from Gian Luigi Ferri's Jul 1, 1993, shooting spree at Pettit and Martin. Feelings generated by the shootings have led to a discussion on public vilification of lawyers and the organization of the Legal Community Against Violence, a new gun control lobby started by a Pettit partner. The group will work with Washington, DC's Handgun Control Inc against the sale of assault weapons of the kind used in the Jul 1 shooting.
