Richard J. Rawson, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Lucent Technologies Inc, a leading designers and manufacturers of communications software and products which was spun off from AT&T in 1996. Lucent has seen its earnings increase by more than 100% per share since the business was started. Rawson presides over a department of 200 in-house attorneys, and as much as 80% of the Lucent legal work remains in-house. Lucent's acquisition of Ascend Communications Inc, a company making computerized networking equipment, is closing in spr 1999.
