In memoriam: Erwin Nathaniel Griswold
Article Abstract:
Erwin N. Griswold successfully pursued three distinct careers, as Professor and Dean of Harvard Law School, Solicitor General of the United States, and member of the bar. Griswold was faculty member and Dean of Harvard Law School from 1934 to 1967, including 21 years as dean, and served as Solicitor General from 1967 to 1973. At the age of 69, Griswold became a partner at the law firm of Jones Day, working on Supreme Court and other appellate cases. He also served on the United States Commission on Civil Rights and was elected to a membership in the American Law Institute in 1941.

In memoriam: Phillip E. Areeda
Article Abstract:
Harvard Law professor Phillip E. Areeda was a preeminent legal authority on antitrust law, having authored a 10-volume treatise on the subject. During his career at Harvard from 1961 until his death in 1995, he was well-regarded by students and colleagues as an intellectual giant and an excellent teacher. The outline of his 1990 lecture on the Socratic method is a detailed example of Areeda's legal scholarship and intellectual ability.
