It's a new era for the fund's fallen chief; a judge takes a decidedly dim view of John G. Bennett Jr.'s request for an allowance
Article Abstract:
Foundation for New Era Philanthropy founder John G. Bennett Jr found his request for $9,880 in monthly living expenses sharply questioned by the judge overseeing the organization's bankruptcy. The foundation apparently operated as a Ponzi scheme that drew in sophisticated and wealthy investors, and now has assets of $34 million and debts of up to $170 million. US District Judge Anita B. Brody reduced Bennett's allowance from $5,000 to $4,500 monthly rather than increasing it as requested, questioning cable television and telephone expenses.

'Standby' counsel is ordered; 1st such criminal case?
Article Abstract:
A federal district judge has ordered that pro se racketeering defendant Richard O. Bertoli receive free stand-by counsel from the law firm which formerly represented him, Pdvey, Sachs, Meanor, Catenacci, Hildner and Cocoziello. Podvey Sachs complains that it is inappropriate for an experienced pro se defendant with means to receive free legal help, but has not made a decision about appeal.
