Many time-and-billing computer programs are available for lawyers, or for service professional in general, and most can help improve the overall management of a practice. The different programs have varying degrees of emphasis on legal clerical functions and accounting bookkeeping ones, or front and back office. The most important element in making a choice is the list of administrative tasks it must do. Time Matters, Timeslips Deluxe, Carpe Diem, Amicus Attorney, and PC LAWjr are examined; the latter two optionally link.

There are software programs which can help a law firm maintain information necessary for aggressive client development, such as lists of seminar attendees, newsletter recipients, and lists of client contacts. Even if not used for marketing, personal contact data can be given to anyone in the law firm who interacts with those contacted. Programs discussed are Cole Valley Software's Legal Ease, Advanced Productivity Software's Marketecture, And Maximizer Technologies' MultiActive Maximizer.
