Scientific fraud and the law; claims of misconduct are bringing lawyers into the laboratory
Article Abstract:
Scientific misconduct cases have increased and have ranged from accusations of plagiarism or fraud to cases filed under the False Claims Act by graduate students blowing the whistle on a defrauding of the government. Federal funding agencies may investigate possible misconduct using their funds. Investigations of scientific misconduct typically begin with the institution involved, then proceed to the Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Research Integrity or a similar branch of the National Science Foundation. Cases unresolved at this level may go to the courts.

Paving the data highway; rolling out the road to the information future is a job for lawyers, too
Article Abstract:
A new legal specialty is emerging as attorneys deal with the ramification of the new 'digital data highway.' Legal questions involved in this highway include contracts, entertainment and communications law as well as intellectual property law. Data on the highway will ultimately travel by means of wireless data communications, and the fiber-optic telephone network needed already exists throughout much of the country.
