Jerry's judges; presidential candidate Jerry Brown radically remade the face of the California judiciary while governor there
Article Abstract:
Jerry Brown appointed some 860 new judges during his tenure as governor of California in the mid-seventies and eighties. Approximately 40% of them were women and minorities. Conventional wisdom has it that Brown considered race, gender and liberal politics more important than experience and ability in making his appointments, and that these judges changed the criminal justice system for the worse by making it much too lenient. In the decade since then, however, no more of Brown's appointments have been disciplined than those of anyone else, and the get-tough-on-criminals movement predates Brown.

The judgemaker; strategist Joseph R. Cerrell has helped keep dozens on the bench
Article Abstract:
Joseph R. Cerrell is a political strategist who has specialized in crafting campaigns to help judges under fire remain on the bench. One of his more recent campaigns was Judge Joyce Karlin's successful campaign to remain on the Los Angeles Superior Court in spite of a public outcry, especially in the Afro-American community, after she sentenced to probation a Korean grocer convicted of shooting and killing a black teenager over a shoplifting dispute.

A tangle of hollow branches: some law firms list dozens of offices. The question is, what's behind the door?
Article Abstract:
Many law firms are advertising the presence of branch offices that actually have no lawyers and few other staff members such as a Chadbourne & Parke office which was actually just a rented space. This practice has been tested in numerous law suits which charge the law firms with misrepresentation and questionable legal ethics.
