Judiciary curtails programs to pay for CJA
Article Abstract:
The federal judiciary is in financial straits after deciding to shift $24.5 million from existing programs to cover a shortfall created by the Criminal Justice Act. Funding was frozen for new referrals to drug abuse programs, filling of support personnel vacancies and courthouse construction. A partial freeze on funds for computer repairs and purchase and installation of security systems was implemented. On Jul 28, 1992 the House approved a resolution including a $31.25 million supplement for the judiciary, but this has received no action from the Senate.

Legal bills stillborn in Congress; legislators leave town
Article Abstract:
Legislators left town at the close of the 102nd Congress with a number of legal bills unresolved, including products liability reform, RICO limits, environmental racism, bankruptcy law and criminal justice bills. The federal courts are unhappy that Congress appropriated some $370 million less than they felt was necessary for funding to remain comparable to 1992.
